WHY USE A HYDRAULIC RELEASE BEARING?
Every clutch release system comes with trade-offs.
Clutch Masters designed its hydraulic release bearing system to reduce the number of moving and wearing components in the clutch release system while providing softer pedal effort, more consistent pressure for smoother engagement, and reduced shock to the drivetrain.
Instead of an external slave cylinder acting through a clutch fork and separate release bearing, the hydraulic actuator and release bearing become one assembly inside the transmission.
There is a trade-off. Because the hydraulic release bearing is located inside the transmission, servicing or replacing it requires removing the transmission.
For some builds, however, moving the release system inside provides another valuable benefit: room. Eliminating the external slave cylinder, clutch fork and pivot arrangement frees up space around the transmission that may be needed for other components.
It’s not about one system being better than another. It’s about choosing the trade-offs that make sense for your build.
CLUTCH SETUP & SHIMMING
When used with the Clutch Masters FX725 clutch, this hydraulic release bearing does not require additional shimming.
If you are using this hydraulic release bearing with a different clutch, do not assume the installed height will be the same. The clutch/flywheel stack and hydraulic release bearing position must be measured before installation to determine the actual air gap and any shimming required.
Clutch Masters provides the measurement, air-gap and shimming procedure in the installation instructions linked below. These measurements and any required shimming are completed before the transmission is installed.
